A sudden drop in filtration
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
AKI is an abrupt rise in serum creatinine or a fall in urine output over hours to days.
AKI is classified by where the problem sits: before the kidney (prerenal), inside it (intrinsic), or after it (postrenal). The location drives the fix.
Locate the problem
Prerenal = poor perfusion (BUN/Cr > 20). Intrinsic = ATN/nephrotoxins. Postrenal = obstruction (relieve it).
