GERD: Acid Suppression
GERD is reflux of gastric contents causing symptoms or mucosal damage.
Step therapy: lifestyle + PRN antacids/H2RAs for mild disease; a PPI is first-line for frequent symptoms or erosive esophagitis. Alarm features (dysphagia, bleeding, weight loss) warrant endoscopy.
PPI timing
Take PPIs 30-60 minutes before the first meal - they only block actively secreting proton pumps.
