Reversible airway inflammation
Asthma: Control the Inflammation
Asthma is chronic airway inflammation with variable, reversible airflow obstruction and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
Reversibility is confirmed by an FEV1 rise of >= 12% after a SABA. The modern cornerstone is inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)-containing therapy; SABA alone is no longer preferred because it ignores the inflammation.
Asthma vs COPD
Asthma: reversible FEV1, nonproductive cough worse at night, allergy-related, younger onset. COPD: irreversible obstruction, productive cough, smoking history.
