A retrovirus that empties the immune system
HIV: The Basics
HIV is an RNA retrovirus that infects and depletes CD4 helper T-cells.
Over 1.1 million people in the US live with HIV; about 14% are undiagnosed. A person is classified as having AIDS when the CD4 count falls below 200 cells/mm3 or an AIDS-defining opportunistic infection develops. The lower the CD4, the greater the infection risk.
Two numbers
Viral load = how much virus (monitors therapy; goal undetectable). CD4 = immune strength (guides OI prophylaxis).
