Overcoming the immunological barrier
Immunosuppressive Agents in Organ Transplantation
Solid organ transplantation has become the therapy of choice for many patients with end-organ failure. It generally requires immunosuppression to overcome the immunological barrier.
Transplantation replaces diseased organs (Heart, Liver, Lung, Kidney) with viable ones from donors. The immune system naturally sees the new organ as a 'foreign antigen' and attacks it. Our goal is to balance suppressing this attack while preventing life-threatening infections.
Graft vs Host
Host vs Graft: Immune system attacks organ. Graft vs Host (BMT): Transplanted marrow attacks host tissues.
