Schizophrenia: A Constellation of Symptoms
Schizophrenia is a major psychiatric disorder affecting approximately 1% to 2% of the world population. First described in the late 1800s, it exists as a constellation of symptoms that includes hallucinations, delusions, decreased affect, disorganized behavior, and impaired functioning.
Schizophrenia is not a single symptom but a cluster β a 'constellation' β that pulls together perception (hallucinations), belief (delusions), emotion (decreased affect), behavior (disorganization), and function (impairment). There is no known cure. Treatment is lifelong for most patients because 80% of untreated first-episode patients relapse within 5 years. Understanding the symptom categories first is essential, because drug choice depends on which symptoms dominate.
