Constipation is a decrease in the frequency of fecal elimination, characterized by hard, dry, sometimes painful stools. Normal stool frequency ranges from 3 times daily to 3 times per week. Patients may have abdominal bloating, headaches, low back pain, and a sense of rectal fullness from incomplete evacuation. It is more common in people over 65 and in women.
This chapter covers four self-care areas: Constipation, Diarrhea, Hemorrhoids, and Heartburn/Dyspepsia. Self-care for constipation should be limited to 7 days.
