Chapter 4 - Extemporaneous Prescription Compounding
Making a medicine for ONE patient, by hand
What is Extemporaneous Compounding?
Compounding is defined by the USP as the preparation, mixing, assembling, altering, packaging, and labeling of a drug, drug delivery device, or device in accordance with a licensed practitioner's prescription, medication order, or initiative based on the practitioner/patient/pharmacist relationship in the course of professional practice.
Compounding is pharmacy at the bench: you build an individualized medicine for one patient from a prescriber's order. It includes preparing dosage forms (human or animal), reconstituting/manipulating commercial products, and preparing for research or prescriber office use where the law permits.
