Chapter 3
Chapter 3 - Biopharmaceutics & Drug Delivery Systems
How a drug's physics decides what the body does with it
What is Biopharmaceutics?
Biopharmaceutics is the study of the relation of the physical and chemical properties of a drug to its bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamic and toxicologic effects.
Chapter 2 built the pill; this chapter follows it into the body. Biopharmaceutics links a drug's physicochemical properties (solubility, particle size, ionization, salt form) to how much reaches the blood and how fast. A drug product is the finished dosage form (tablet, capsule, solution) with its excipients; the drug delivery system also includes the container and the patient.
