Chapter 2
Chapter 2 - Pharmaceutical Principles & Dosage Forms
The physics behind every pill, solution and cream
What are Pharmaceutical Principles?
Pharmaceutical principles are the underlying physicochemical principles that allow a drug to be incorporated into a pharmaceutical dosage form (e.g., solution, capsule). These principles apply whether the drug is extemporaneously compounded by the pharmacist or manufactured commercially.
Before a drug can become a tablet, cream or injection, it must obey physics and chemistry. This chapter is the 'why' behind every dosage form. The finished dosage form contains the active drug plus inert excipients that make up the vehicle (formulation matrix).
